I am referring to this summer as “the summer that never was.” That seems to be the theme as we are all encouraged to continue to stay home, socially distance (or physically distance is the term I prefer), and wear our masks.
As an academic who teaches and studies health communication, this pandemic provides an unparalleled learning opportunity. We are getting an amazing first hand glimpse of health communication and crisis communication. It’s unfortunate that there has been so much confusion. Undoubtedly, we will spend much time this fall in my Health Communication course discussing what went wrong, what went well, and how things could have been improved.
I am also teaching Strategic Communication for Public Relations this fall. I know there will be lots of opportunity to specifically examine the organizational communication around COVID-19 and how brands and organizations adjusted their public relations in light of the pandemic.
In the meantime, congratulations to all students who have just graduated! I wish you much success in your future plans. To those returning students, I look forward to working with you soon.
